Emesh
WorldFirst appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 22
Emesh is a high-gravity planet in the Veil of Marinus, at the frontier of the Sollan Empire near Cielcin space. It is home to both a human colonial population and the indigenous Umandh, approximately eight million strong. The planet is ruled by Count Balian Mataro from the coastal city of Borosevo.
Geography
Emesh is tectonically dead, with rare landmasses of low sedimentary accretions above a shallow saline world-ocean dotted with island shoals. It orbits a large orange-red sun and has two moons: the green moon Binah (with nascent terraforming forests) and the white moon Armand, both locked in polar orbits that give southern latitudes extreme tidal swings. Gravity is more than thirty percent above Delos standard -- strong enough that lifelong residents develop amplified physical strength, and even the Cielcin, who live on ships at a fraction of standard gravity, must laminate their bones and reinforce their muscles to survive on its surface. The atmosphere is perpetually hot, thick, and cloying at the equator, with perpetual orange sunlight, while the southern continent of Anshar has a cold, wind-scoured coastal climate. The planet has no forests. Brownouts are frequent. Rare volcanic outcrops from an ancient tectonic era include the island of Ulakiel. Storms are violent during storm season, periodically flooding the Calagah dig site. Debris from the orbital battle against the Cielcin fell as burning streaks across the night sky. Native fauna include ornithons, large flying insects, creatures called "bugs" (though not insects), and ten-meter congrid eels. The planet was terraformed using Holy Terran Chantry-provided technology. The local year is much longer than a standard year.
Culture
The Umandh, approximately eight million globally, are the indigenous tripodal species. They are enslaved under the terms of an ancient Holy Terran Chantry mandate that required the obliteration of Umandh native culture in exchange for terraforming technology. They communicate through biological droning and create woven tactile anaglyphs that appear to imitate symbols left by the Quiet at Calagah. House Mataro keeps several hundred Umandh in the palace. The Fishers Guild operates large-scale fisheries using Umandh labor. Borosevo has a population of five million. Coastal populations are fed by glass-tower urban farms and offshore fisheries. The Borosevo Colosso provides gladiatorial entertainment. The Gray Rot epidemic, introduced by an offworld trader, has devastated the plebeian population, with corpse fires burning in plazas and on street corners; palatine residents are immune. The local year is much longer than a standard year. During first contact under the Norman settlers, the Umandh engaged in guerrilla fighting, dragging fishing junks under at sea. Emesh sits on the fringes of Imperial society, where heterodox technologies such as Tavros Demarchy neural laces draw less scrutiny than they would at the heart of Imperial power.
Politics
Emesh is ruled by Count Balian Mataro and his consort Lord Luthor Astin-Shin-Mataro, the Minister of Finance. The High Chancellor is Liada Ogir. Vassal houses include Melluan, Kvar, and Veisi; Archon Perun Veisi governs the southern continent from Tolbaran in Springdeep. House Mataro descended on Emesh more than a millennium ago, backed by three Imperial Legions, displacing Extrasolarian interests and the Norman United Fellowship. Imperial annexation required a decade of struggle. The Holy Terran Chantry holds extensive leverage through the ancient terraforming debt, enforced by Grand Prior Ligeia Vas. The Chantry maintains a bastille for inquisitorial operations. Knight-Tribune Raine Smythe commands the 437th Centaurine Legion. The Emesh Home Defense Force is a separate local military force. A joint action by the Emesh Defense Force and the 437th annihilated a Cielcin incursion force at the system's heliopause -- the second such intrusion, following earlier scout incursions. A Cielcin pilgrim vessel crashed on Anshar, and its surviving crew revealed that the Calagah ruins are a holy site of the Watchers -- the same beings who built ruins on the Cielcin homeworld of Se Vattayu. The Legion supercarrier Obdurate orbits above Borosevo. Emesh has been under Imperial rule for nearly a millennium. Every one of the Quiet ruins except Annica is in Imperial hands.
Notable Locations
Borosevo is the principal city, built on a coral atoll on steel pilings above the shallow world-ocean. Borosevo Castle sits atop a concrete ziggurat one thousand feet high, with the Spear Tower rising from it. The Borosevo Colosso is a large gladiatorial arena. The Chantry sanctum and its adjacent brutalist bastille stand in the White District; the bastille houses inquisitorial interrogation chambers below sea level. The city is divided between the White District and the lower canal warren of Belows. A salvage yard on the waterfront handles ship impound and trade. The Calagah ruins on Anshar are part of a galaxy-spanning network of Quiet sites that includes ruins on Annica, Se Vattayu, Sadal Suud, Judecca, and other worlds. The ruins are built of structureless black stone with architecture canted 0.374 degrees from true. The black stone returns no data to field scanners and has been connected to fragments recovered from the Extrasolarian vessel Demiurge, suggesting the Quiet's building material may be a form of highmatter. Interior tunnels are coated in circular anaglyphs, and sealed chambers exist within the bedrock -- constructed already sealed, as if space were inserted into solid rock. The ruins contain a three-hundred-foot-wide facade of columns, arches, and pilasters converging inward, and a domed interior junction covered in interlocking circular glyphs. The ruins are attributed to the Quiet, an extinct pre-human civilization whose structures date to nearly a million years ago. Annica, the oldest Quiet ruin, is temporally connected to Emesh -- its corridors reach so far back through time that one walking long enough down them would emerge on Emesh. The Cielcin call the builders the Watchers and consider both Calagah and Se Vattayu holy sites. Tolbaran on Anshar is the old Norman capital, now seat of Archon Veisi. Ulakiel is the largest Umandh alienage island.
