Ligeia Vas

Ligeia Vas is the Grand Prior of the Chantry on Emesh and mother of the late Chanter Gilliam Vas, killed by Hadrian in a duel. An ancient palatine woman of formidable institutional reach, she holds leverage over House Mataro through the Chantry's ancient compact and has driven the inquisitorial campaign against Hadrian throughout the Cielcin crisis.

A zealous ideologue, she brands Hadrian "demon-tongued" for suggesting the Cielcin might be spoken to, demands the cultural obliteration of the native Umandh, and characterizes Extrasolarians as apostates and demoniacs. Her son's death at Hadrian's hands compounds her institutional hostility into a personal vendetta -- she wants him alive to suffer, not simply dead.

At the final war council, she demands the Cielcin captives be killed and given to the people, but is publicly overruled when Tribune Smythe requisitions them by Imperial authority and reminds her that the Imperial Legion, not the Chantry Synod, holds jurisdiction. She visibly retreats when Sir Olorin challenges her position with a single pointed question about what the Chantry's methods have actually produced.
