Holy Terran Chantry

Faction

First appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 1

The Holy Terran Chantry is the dominant religious and political institution of the Sollan Empire and, through its Inner Order — also called the Shadow Kingdom and the Princes of Earth — the hidden parallel empire that has controlled Imperial history for thousands of years. At Tenba, the Chantry's Shadow Kingdom steps openly into the light: it installs Prince Alexander as Emperor Alexander VI under the title 'Firstborn Son of Earth,' directed by the Cantor Yod as Alexander's handler. Hadrian Marlowe is publicly executed on Tenba at the Chantry's direction, his death becoming the cornerstone of the reformed Empire. The Chantry has preached against high technology for ten thousand years while secretly wielding capabilities — daimonic back doors in the Imperial navy, reverse-engineered Archontic weapons, a fleet of warships — that exceed anything known to the rest of the human universe.

Organization

The Chantry is governed publicly by the Synod under the Synarch, but the true authority lies with the hidden Inner Order — the Shadow Kingdom, also called the Princes of Earth and Sons of Earth. The Inner Order is led by the High Patriarch ('His Selfness and Equal of the Emperors'). The visible Synarch is the 'mouth, not the head,' genuinely ignorant of the institution's secret activities. This hidden structure constitutes two coterminal empires occupying the same political space 'as the bloodstream is with the body.' Many of the Exalted were secretly Inner Order members.

Grand priors and priors administer local sanctums across all Imperial worlds; grand priors can exercise economic and logistical leverage over entire planetary systems through trade stymies, ship search-and-seizure orders, and officer detentions. Lorica College on Vesperad trains ambassadors and inquisitors with jurisdiction over forty thousand worlds. Cathars wear black robes, are bald, and conduct rites blindfolded as a symbol of the Chantry's icon of Justice; they are forbidden to speak during the rite of inquest and wield the White Sword — a ceramic blade sheathed in human skin — as the instrument of execution. The Chantry administers criminal justice across the Empire: convicted criminals are tattooed with their offenses in black lettering on their foreheads; mutilations are standard punishments. The Chantry enforces palatine ring-pledges through the Inquisition. Striking a chanter anointed with the ash of the Homeworld is a capital offense.

The Sentinels are the Chantry's elite military arm: zealots trained for decades in black adamant plate marked with the ring-of-Earth symbol. They are equipped with repulsors, flare rockets, beam rifles, electricity gauntlets, and in some cases exotic highmatter pistols capable of firing through adamant armor. Sentinels move in a coordinated fashion resembling a distributed emergent consciousness and are capable of one-on-one combat with a Maeskolos or khandasattva. At Tenba, a force of Sentinels armored all in black with the ring-of-Earth on every breast commands the execution plaza under Captain Keriot, who carries an exotic highmatter pistol.

The Choir produces biological and chemical weapons including dispholide (Priest's Poison), available exclusively through the Chantry. The Choir and cathars together function as a scientific body that studies and eliminates anomalous human abilities; Emperor William sent Hadrian to Nessus partly to protect him from 'the knives of the Chantry's Choir and its cathars.'

The Chantry maintains a fleet of warships. The Ararat was a dedicated warship described as 'a black castle of a ship, a rootless mountain,' destroyed by the Demiurge's Darklight weapon. At Tenba, the Chantry brings at least a hundred ships, the smallest half as large as the Ararat. Earth's star system is described as a fortress the Chantry has prepared for thousands of years.

The Chantry's cyberian and daimonic capabilities exceed anything known to the wider Empire: it secretly manufactures daimon machine intelligences on Earth; it has written all system code for the Imperial navy and installed back doors into it; it has reverse-engineered Archontic (Darklight) weapons from the Demiurge; and its daimon can kill Cielcin nahute silently by computer-sorcery. The Argentine served as a cable-linked communications vessel for daimon AIM-Gamma-03. The Martian Guard — Alexander's personal soldiers — largely belongs to the Chantry.

The Inner Order holds black-robed, white-crowned priests who attend Cantor Yod. Senior Inner Order figures wear onyx masks and striped white-and-golden nemes, similar to the style Kedron and Tarquin wore. The Priest-Princes of the Inner Order hold the rank of Prince-Prior.

The Inner Order has maintained the concealment of Earth's survival from the wider galaxy for thousands of years and has prepared Earth's star system as a military fortress. Bassander Lin reveals that the Chantry's publicly taught history is largely fabricated and that its promise of humanity's return to Earth is 'cant, a confection spun of lie and dreaming.' The Chantry holds ancient contractual obligations with planetary lords: on Emesh, its mandate stipulates that in exchange for terraforming technology granted to House Mataro over a thousand years ago, native Umandh culture must be obliterated and no god tolerated but Earth and her Son.

History

The Holy Terran Chantry has maintained dominance over the Sollan Empire for thousands of years by controlling a fabricated historical narrative, including concealing Earth's survival. It has wielded arts 'higher and darker than anyone dares dream, all while preaching against high technology for ten thousand years.'

The Chantry cultivated Prince Alexander as its chosen candidate for the Imperial throne — its 'faithful Son of Earth' and puppet Emperor. It orchestrated Hadrian Marlowe's assassination on Forum and conspired against him on at least four separate occasions. During the Demiurge expedition, the Chantry dispatched twelve Sentinels under Kedron to board the vessel; all twelve were killed and daimon AIM-Gamma-03 was destroyed by Hadrian. The Argentine was destroyed or withdrawn following the operation's failure.

At the battle of Gododdin, a Chantry prince-prior in the hold of the Aurora demonstrated the ability to kill Cielcin nahute silently by computer-sorcery and to slay chimera by the same means. The Chantry freed Prince Alexander during the battle and coordinated with him, positioning him to claim the Imperial throne. The Chantry built back doors into all Imperial navy system code, making the fleet structurally vulnerable to Chantry override. It reverse-engineered Archontic weapons from the Demiurge. The warship Ararat attacks the Demiurge and is destroyed by the Darklight weapon.

Forum is destroyed; Earth becomes the center of humanity's universe. Emperor William rules from Avalon, 'ruled in turn by Earth.'

At Tenba, the Shadow Kingdom steps openly into the light. The Chantry brings a fleet of at least a hundred ships. Lord Theudas, the Prince-Prior of the Chantry, places his hand on Alexander's shoulder at the proclamation and announces Alexander VI as Emperor — Firstborn Son of Earth. Cantor Yod directs the proceedings, rebuking Alexander when he acts precipitously during Hadrian's captivity and managing the schedule of the public execution. Hadrian identifies Yod as the true power behind Alexander's throne, calling Alexander Yod's 'puppet Emperor.' Hadrian Marlowe is publicly hanged on the scaffold at Tenba at the Chantry's direction. His death becomes the cornerstone of the reformed Empire.

Hadrian and Selene had intended Tenba as the site of a broadcast nexus to expose the truth about the Chantry to the galaxy, but they never had the opportunity to use it. Hadrian reflects that when the truth eventually emerges, 'it will fill the stars with hysteric violence.' Hadrian notes in his closing narration that he returned from beyond death but will speak no word of where or when or how.

The Chantry was deceived into believing Hadrian personally holds the genetic key it seeks — a deception arranged by Nicephorus, who was killed by a Sentinel at Tenba. The Jaddian prince Kaim-Olorin confirms that the Chantry is actively kept out of Jadd; at the time of Hadrian's execution, the Lothrians are burning Jadd, and Hadrian gives the Darklight weapon to Olorin to counter them before surrendering himself.

Notable Members

The High Patriarch ('His Selfness and Equal of the Emperors') is the true hidden head of the Inner Order. Synarch Heraklonas heads the public-facing Synod but is ignorant of the institution's secret activities. Cantor Yod is Alexander's handler and the true operational power behind the puppet Emperor; described as a living shadow with an unreadable face, he directs the execution proceedings at Tenba and manages Alexander's actions. Lord Theudas serves as Prince-Prior of the Chantry at Tenba; he wears an onyx mask and striped white-and-golden nemes, places a hand on Alexander's shoulder during the proclamation, and announces Alexander VI as Emperor. Captain Keriot commands the Sentinel force at Tenba; he carries an exotic highmatter pistol that fires through adamant armor and kills Knight-Excubitor Sir Verus through the helm. A prince-prior of the Inner Order appeared at Gododdin in Aurora's hold, demonstrating computer-sorcery capabilities and freeing Alexander during the battle. Kedron commanded the Sentinels on the Demiurge; all twelve under his command were killed. Ship (AIM-Gamma-03, Alseid-class Intelligence) was the Chantry daimon housed in a black cube bearing Earth icons, presenting as a holographic young woman with milk-white flesh and pitch-black hair; destroyed by Hadrian. Samek is a senior Chantry operative involved in succession politics. Grand Prior Ligeia Vas led the Chantry's presence on Emesh, where Chanter Gilliam Vas — her illegitimate palatine son — served on Count Mataro's council before his death. Prior Eusebia presides over the Devil's Rest sanctum on Delos and sits on Lord Alistair's council. Chanter Abiatha tends the Devil's Rest sanctum on Delos.
