Se Vattayu

World

First appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 72

Se Vattayu is the lost homeworld of the Cielcin, described as gone and no longer accessible. The Cielcin name for their world translates literally as "the Earth" -- the word vattayu means earth, ground, or dirt. The world is notable as a site of ruins left by ancient beings the Cielcin call the Watchers. The planet's subterranean nature made the Cielcin physiologically unsuited to surface habitation, and stellar radiation is lethal to the species. Se Vattayu is the world from which the Watcher Elu carried the Cielcin to their new home, the neighboring world of Eue, after building the first ships.

Geography

Se Vattayu is characterized by deep underground caverns and pits. The Cielcin were raised in pits beneath the planet's surface from the earliest periods of their history. The Watchers guided the Cielcin underground from their earliest evolutionary origins. Stellar radiation from the planet's sun is lethal to the Cielcin, who cannot survive on the surface. The planet contains a ruined city with poisoned water sources. The world lies in proximity to Eue, which became the Cielcin's next home after the departure engineered by Elu.

Culture

Se Vattayu is the cradle where the Cielcin were born and raised. The Cielcin regard it with profound reverence as their point of origin. From their underground pits, the Watchers taught the Cielcin to look at the sky. Cielcin cannot be settled on surface worlds because stellar radiation is lethal to them. The word yama, meaning "egg" in the tongue of Se Vattayu, is associated with the early identity of the being later known as Miudanar. Objects originating from Se Vattayu survive as ancient relics, including artifacts predating the Cielcin's departure. The Watcher Elu heeded the call of Miudanar and traveled to Se Vattayu, where it built the first ships of the Cielcin. These ships carried the Cielcin from Se Vattayu to the neighboring world Eue, where Elu built its empire -- marking Se Vattayu as the departure point for the entire Cielcin diaspora.

Notable Locations

Se Vattayu contains ruins built by the ancient beings the Cielcin call the Watchers -- the same entities whose underground chambers appear in the ruins of Calagah on Emesh. A ruined city exists on the planet, its water sources poisoned. An old, ruined tannery with sheets of white manskin hung from spools is part of the planet's landscape. These ruins date to the period of the Cielcin's habitation before they departed with Elu for Eue.
