Severine

Character

First appears in Demon in White, Chapter 84

Severine is a witch of MINOS and physician serving Syriani Dorayaica aboard Dharan-Tun. She is a posthuman sorcerer who escaped death on Arae -- where Siran shot her original body -- by transmitting her mind into a Mandari host: high-cheekboned, bronze-skinned, with flat gray eyes that Hadrian finds more mechanical than organic. Her Norman name and Jaddian speech suggest she was once a Jaddian immigrant who has since been remade many times by MINOS.

During Hadrian's captivity she studies his genome and neurological scans, deducing that the Quiet is responsible for his anomalous brain activity. She offers him consciousness transfer into a new body as an alternative to sacrifice, pressing the offer across multiple encounters and resorting to pain and near-drowning when he refuses. She articulates MINOS's founding mythology -- tracing the organization's name through Minos, Mannus, Manu, Manes, Menes, and Adam -- framing the group as the heirs of civilization's original architects.

In the final stages of Hadrian's captivity she attends him in gray robes fringed with white, provides limited first aid on Dorayaica's orders, and answers his question about the duration of his imprisonment with clinical precision: seven years, three months, and twenty-seven days. She escorts Lorian Aristedes to the shuttle after the proceedings at Eue.
