MINOS

Faction

First appears in Demon in White, Chapter 15

MINOS is a fanatic fraternal order of Extrasolarian sorcerers -- internally called 'the Lodge' -- dedicated to the dismantling and destruction of the Sollan Empire, allied with the Cielcin and with the Exalted Sojourners. The organization takes its name from the mythical figure Minos, the first king of civilization, and considers itself his successors in the work of improving humanity. MINOS magi exist as phantom programs that bounce consciousness between bodies, and the organization operates covert cells across all major human polities.

Organization

MINOS is composed of once-human Extrasolarian magi -- described as posthuman sorcerers -- who accepted a bargain with Syriani Dorayaica. The organization is known internally as 'the Lodge' and is characterized as a fanatic fraternal order, not merely a cybernetics company or manufacturer of chimeric body parts. It operates as a covert network with agents embedded across multiple human polities: the Principalities, the Republic, the Small Kingdoms, the remnants of the Freeholds, and the Sollan Empire itself. Extrasolarian demoniacs have infiltrated the Imperial Court. Despite this reach, the magi are few in number. MINOS is allied with both Dorayaica's Cielcin and the Exalted Sojourners.

MINOS takes its name from the mythical figure Minos, whom the organization identifies as the first king of civilization -- known by parallel names across ancient human cultures: Mannus to the Germans, Manu to the Hindus, Manes to the Lydians and Romans, Menes in Egypt, and Adam in Canaan. MINOS considers itself his successors, continuing his work of improving humanity and making men like gods.

The internal hierarchy distinguishes ordinary staff -- nondescript, interchangeable workers in white-and-gray uniforms who may be host bodies for transmitted mind-images -- from the Elect-Masters (also called Masters of the Lodge), who are heavily modified and operate at the center of the organization's work. Operatives possess cerebral implants -- neural laces -- that allow them to broadcast copies of their minds to offworld receivers the moment they face capture, then be installed in new clone or homunculus bodies. Each Elect-Master carries two transmitters: one in the brain and one in the chest, allowing a second mind-transfer if the first body is destroyed. Operatives have modified pain receptors and metallic gray eyes from implant modification. The transmitted mind-images are ghostly thoughtform programs -- described as phantom programs -- that bounce consciousness between bodies. MINOS also possesses technology for performing complete synaptic scans and importing the transcription into a new host body. Operatives will kill themselves rather than be taken alive. MINOS technicians accompanying field operations wear smocks of drab gray with the chevrons of their order in bronze over the heart.

The organization's badge is two interlocked chevrons forming the letter M, worn as a brass plate on the lapel of standard gray smocks.

MINOS constructs specialized containment equipment, including a palanquin -- a polished white ceramic egg functioning as a Faraday Box -- designed to house and transport a Watcher's energies, shielding the creature from the ionosphere so it can pass through a planetary magnetic field.

MINOS operated a hidden fortress on the planet Ganelon, featuring three geodesic glass domes along a green river, a communications spire with a large radio dish for relaying thoughtform signals, a space elevator hightower, research and medical wings with environment-sealed floors, and automated custodial drones. The tall spire housed the transceiver system that allows Elect-Masters to travel between the stars by transmitting their thoughtform-images. A Cielcin scianda fleet and an Extrasolarian Sojourner were stationed in orbit over the compound. The fortress also employed a substantial fleet of iron golems for security. The Ganelon facility was a virology research station where MINOS scientists weaponized LTH-81 using a mutagen cornerstone provided by Kharn Sagara and original mutagen code developed by the Mericanii. The retrovirus is engineered to incapacitate planetary populations by forcing cancerous Mericanii-style growth. The organization manufactured this biological virus for decades. The fortress was ultimately destroyed by atomics.

MINOS also previously operated a laboratory beneath the mountain fortress of Arae, where chimeras were built in experiment tanks. The chimera vayadan-generals MINOS produces are engineered to withstand far more damage than any human or Cielcin could bear. MINOS constructs SOMs -- remote physical vessels that can function independently even when physically severed. MINOS's technological expertise enables the Cielcin to adapt captured human technologies, including body shields, to Cielcin use. On Arae, MINOS forged the first Cielcin-machine hybrids, likely designed and manufactured the Iedyr Yemani's iron bodies, and developed brain implants that translate Cielcin speech to standard. MINOS personnel have access to Cielcin pain collar controls.

MINOS's stated purpose is to force 'change' and 'progress' -- the dissolution of the Empire and the subordination of humanity under the Prophet's Hand, ushering in a new age of progress and human evolution. MINOS also pursues its own agenda independent of its Cielcin alliance, intending to steal a Watcher from its Cielcin allies to wield the creature's power for its own ends. MINOS possesses knowledge of how to find Vorgossos, suggesting contact with Kharn Sagara.

History

MINOS allied with Syriani Dorayaica at some point prior to the events at Arae, accepting a bargain that involved providing their technological expertise to the Cielcin cause. They established a chimera-manufacturing laboratory beneath the mountain fortress of Arae, where they forged the first Cielcin-machine hybrids. When the facility at Arae was discovered, MINOS workers committed suicide by transmitting images of their minds to a waiting ship in deep orbit, shedding their original bodies.

Severine, who had been shot by Siran at Arae, survived through the mind-transmission process and later inhabits a Mandari body. Syriani Dorayaica privately regards Urbaine with contempt.

Imperial intelligence identifies an Extrasolarian transport intercepted near Latarra as belonging to the same MINOS cell encountered at Arae. MINOS is trading with Calen Harendotes, the Monarch of Latarra. The Emperor and Sir Gray Rinehart believe the transport was bound for a hidden MINOS fortress at the unnamed binary system VA-91:35 DB-639D, where chimeric soldiers are suspected of being manufactured -- possibly thousands of Cielcin in fugue pods being surgically prepared. When Imperial boarders came aboard the intercepted transport, MINOS personnel destroyed their own ship by breaching fuel containment, killing the boarding party of a hundred men along with themselves.

At the Ganelon fortress, MINOS scientists weaponized LTH-81 using a mutagen cornerstone provided by Kharn Sagara and original mutagen code developed by the Mericanii. The retrovirus is designed to incapacitate planetary populations by forcing cancerous transformation. The organization manufactured the virus for decades. The Ganelon fortress is ultimately destroyed by atomics delivered by Tenavian and Dayne.

MINOS constructs a Faraday Box palanquin to transport a Watcher through a planetary magnetic field, intending to steal the creature from its Cielcin allies to wield its power independently. On Ganelon, MINOS personnel Gaizka and Urbaine discuss the war between the twin Kharns, indicating awareness of the conflict between the two versions of Kharn Sagara.

Notable Members

Urbaine is a senior Elect-Master who commanded the golem security forces at the Ganelon fortress. His body is a SOM -- a remote physical vessel constructed by the organization. He controls access to Cielcin pain collar functions and speaks of a desire to become like gods and to break the Imperial yoke. Syriani Dorayaica privately regards him with contempt. Severine is a MINOS agent who was present at Arae; after being shot, she survived via mind-transmission and now inhabits a Mandari body. She expounds MINOS's founding mythology. Gaizka is a MINOS agent stationed at the Ganelon facility. Kybalion is a MINOS agent. Abberton is a MINOS scientist involved in designing the LTH-81 retrovirus at the Ganelon facility. Vati Inamna received MINOS brain implants that translate Cielcin speech to standard.
