the Quiet

The Quiet (ke kuchya mnousseir in Valka Onderra's Tavrosi language, meaning 'The Quiet' or 'The Silent') are an ancient extinct civilization attributed with building Calagah on Emesh and apparently other sites across the galaxy, including the Marching Towers on Sadal Suud, the Temple of Athten Var on Judecca, Rubicon, Ozymandias, and Malkuth. They are the true object of Valka's research on Emesh. The Calagah site is estimated to be nearly a million years old, yet appears structurally new. Their existence directly contradicts the Holy Terran Chantry's foundational teaching that humanity is the first advanced intelligence in the universe, and the Chantry actively regulates all data about them within its protectorate. Valka names the builders 'the Quiet' because their sites are entirely mute.

Their sites share a distinctive aesthetic: flat-faced black stone resembling obsidian, formed into pillars and arches of mathematical precision, built into or against natural geological features. The structures contain no tools, no ships, no bodies, no graves, no paint, no pigment, no organic material, and no portable artifacts of any kind — only the structures themselves and carved symbols that remain completely unreadable, with no Rosetta-equivalent found to decode them. The Umandh of Emesh — themselves only approximately 500,000 years from the evolutionary womb — could not have built Calagah, and appear to imperfectly imitate the Quiet's carved symbols in their own story-knot bone chimes.

Their architectural signatures are now more fully understood through active excavation. The Quiet built tunnels that are extremely low-ceilinged and circular in cross-section, coated floor-to-ceiling in shallow circular anaglyphs of varying sizes — tangent circles, some recessed and some convex. Interior domed chambers bear interlocking circular glyphs that superficially resemble Umandh knot-pattern artwork but vastly predate the Umandh. They constructed entirely sealed underground chambers not buried but built sealed from the start, as if space were inserted into solid rock. Neutrino scanners detect additional such chambers beneath the Calagah site. Their building material has no detectable molecular structure and appears simply as 'black' to field analysis units. Every structural element they built is canted by exactly 0.374 degrees from true parallel — nothing runs parallel. Whether the Quiet colonized fewer worlds than humanity or simply chose not to terraform is unknown. A possible connection between the Quiet ruins and the Cielcin is suggested by visions experienced at Calagah, though its nature remains entirely unclear.
