Scholiast order
FactionFirst appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 1
The scholiast order is an ancient order of philosopher-scholars operating throughout the Sollan Empire. Its members serve as tutors, advisors, and explorers, trained to substitute for the daimon computation machines forbidden by the Holy Terran Chantry. The order is addressed with the honorific 'Tor' and includes the Chalcenterite as a recognized sub-classification. The order staffs the Imperial Library at Nov Belgaer on Colchis and provides counselors aboard military vessels.
Organization
Scholiasts are addressed with the honorific 'Tor.' The Jaddian equivalent term for them is 'hudr.' They wear plain cotton robes or surcoats dyed a distinctive green, with bronze degree insignia indicating their level of attainment within the order. Their minds are trained to substitute for forbidden machine computation -- scholiasts do not forget, though they regard total recall as the minimum baseline for membership. The order's psychological method is not the suppression of feelings but rather their compartmentalization, which exposes the parallel processing capacity of the trained human mind. The order includes at least one recognized sub-classification: the Chalcenterite. The order maintains a body of stoic doctrine transmitted through tutorship, described as the scholiast stoic tradition, including the Eight Forms of Obedience -- obedience out of fear of pain; fear of the other; love for the person of the hierarch; loyalty to the office of the hierarch; respect for the laws of men and of heaven; piety; compassion; and devotion -- and aphorisms such as 'Grief is deep water' and 'Rage is blindness.' The order maintains cloisters at noble houses, in archons' courts, and aboard warships as counselors. The order maintains formal athenaeum institutions on designated worlds, including the athenaeum on Teukros governed by an athenaeum primate. The order staffs the Imperial Library at Nov Belgaer on the world of Colchis; access to Nov Belgaer is restricted to those scholiasts and requires a writ from the Imperial Office. The order also maintains an Expeditionary Corps for exploration. Entry requires a handwritten letter of introduction in the order's cipher penned by an existing member. The Chantry permits one chest of personal effects for those entering the order. Scholiasts undergo significant life extension. The Chantry permits them only limited technologies within their cloister. Very few scholiasts serve aboard Imperial Legion vessels, and those capable of translating the Cielcin language are particularly scarce.
History
The scholiast order predates the Sollan Empire, with roots extending to the era of the Mericanii machine-lords, dead some sixteen thousand years. In their history, scholiasts counseled Emperors, sailed into unknown places beyond the light of the suns, and served on teams that brought new inventions and knowledge into the world. The Holy Terran Chantry filed technological injunctions against the order for historical heresies, restricting scholiasts to books and the pursuits of the mind. The order is regarded with suspicion and scholiasts are among the first targets of pogrom and Inquisition, partly because of their ancient connection to the Mericanii survivors of the Foundation War. Teaching or studying the Cielcin language draws particular Chantry scrutiny. Tor Simeon the Red was a legendary Expeditionary Corps explorer who discovered the world of Judecca and made first contact with the Irchtani species. When his crew mutinied to sell the Irchtani into slavery, the Irchtani helped Simeon survive; he learned their language through music and was eventually buried in the Irchtani's holiest black temple of Athten Var on Judecca. The Irchtani called him 'Unaan Kril' (Red Worm) because their eyes perceive green as red. The Chantry maintains oversight authority over scholiasts' participation in archaeological excavations and can sequester their findings. The Chantry swept the Calagah ruins on Emesh in the first century of Imperial occupation and continues to tolerate the excavation as theologically low-risk, but has made clear through Tor Ada's warning that it will sequester all findings when it decides to intervene. In the era of Demon in White, Tor Varro serves as counselor aboard the Tamerlane during campaigns against the Cielcin in the Norman Expanse, including a boarding action against a Cielcin worldship near the Dion Station corridor.
Notable Members
Tor Gibson served House Marlowe as scholiast tutor for 317 years, tutoring both Lord Alistair and his son Hadrian. He transmitted a body of stoic teaching including the Eight Forms of Obedience and aphorisms such as 'Grief is deep water.' He was publicly punished with a noseslit and banished from Delos after falsely confessing to treachery to protect Hadrian, and died in exile. His teaching and counsel continue to shape Hadrian's decisions long after his death. Tor Alcuin was Lord Alistair Marlowe's chief scholiast advisor. Tor Alma was the Marlowe family physician. Tor Terence was attached to the Wong-Hopper Consortium delegation. Tor Ada served Archon Veisi of Emesh on the Calagah excavation team. Tor Vladimir served Count Balian Mataro of Emesh on his ruling council. At the war council convened after the Cielcin attack on Emesh, Tor Vladimir provides measured diplomatic formulations in a soft, uninflected voice, helping frame the council's deliberations and deflecting digressions from the grand prior. Tor Simeon the Red was a legendary Expeditionary Corps explorer credited with discovering Judecca and the Irchtani species, venerated by the Irchtani as a hero and buried in their holiest temple. Tor Varro is a Chalcenterite scholiast serving aboard the Tamerlane as counselor to Hadrian Marlowe. He wears a green surcoat with bronze degree insignia, performs rapid mental arithmetic, and argues assessments of enemy force composition and the risks of proceeding through contested territory. He is regarded as an exemplar of the scholiast order.
