Udax

Udax was an Irchtani centurion who served in Hadrian's auxilia until his death at the Battle of Berenike. Originally stationed at Fort Din on Gododdin under Kithuun-Barda, he attacked Hadrian on the orders of a man he believed to be a Chantry priest, then reconciled with Hadrian in his cell -- insisting that his people are "men, not things" -- and accepted a whipping in place of execution before being taken to war.

At Nemavand, Udax commands the Irchtani in the boarding action against the Cielcin and the defense of the Merciless, fighting with enough valor to earn recognition at the Imperial Triumph. A detail he gave his captors at Gododdin -- that he believed his employer was a Chantry priest -- later resurfaces as evidence against the Holy Terran Chantry.

At Berenike, Udax leads the Irchtani in rescuing Hadrian's trapped force from a collapsing staircase and strikes the Extrasolarian Doctor Urbaine in the crawler battle. He dies when the machine-giant Bahudde crushes him after he drives his zitraa into the giant's sensor-eye on Hadrian's order. Hadrian attends his funeral alongside hundreds of fallen Irchtani, reflecting on Udax's own words: "Not things."
