Nemavand

World

First appears in Demon in White, Chapter 2

Nemavand is a world in Ramannu Province, on the border between the Centaurus Arm and the Norman Expanse, approximately twenty thousand light-years from Forum. It lies at the frontier of the Sollan Empire near Cielcin space, and was the site of a major Imperial military engagement known as the Battle of Nemavand. The planet has desert terrain and is the location of a triumphal arch commemorating Hadrian's victory over the Cielcin Exalted Iubalu.

Geography

Nemavand lies near the galactic core in the border region between the Centaurus Arm and the Norman Expanse. It is approximately twenty thousand light-years from Forum, placing it at the far frontier of Imperial space. Reaching Nemavand from Gododdin requires roughly thirteen or more years of warp travel, including passage through the Dion Station datanet relay and approximately two additional years of transit beyond the relay. The planet has at least some desert terrain, as evidenced by a monument cast into the desert following its defacement.

Politics

Nemavand is a world in Ramannu Province, administered as part of the Centaurus region of the Sollan Empire. The province borders territory where the Cielcin are suspected to maintain their own domain. Prior to the Battle of Nemavand, Cielcin raids across Ramannu Province had increased significantly, and the province was badly in need of reinforcements and supplies. Three Imperial convoys bound for Nemavand went missing in the corridor between Gododdin and Dion Station, including a force of fifty thousand soldiers from the 116th and 337th Sagittarine Legions; the fate of the convoy ships remained unknown. The Battle of Nemavand ended with Hadrian's defeat of the Cielcin Exalted Iubalu and the recovery of surviving Imperial soldiers. The Sollan Empire celebrated the outcome with an Imperial Triumph on Forum, and the Ministry of Public Enlightenment produced war films commemorating the battle. A triumphal arch was erected on Nemavand in honor of the victory. At a later point, by Imperial decree, Hadrian's likeness was chiseled from the arch and cast into the desert following his disgrace.
