Pharos
WorldFirst appears in Howling Dark, Chapter 1
Pharos is a world near Norman Freehold space, situated in the Veil of Marinus. It is known as the site of a military campaign in which the Meidua Red Company, hired by Imperial-aligned rebels, defeated the planetary dictator Marius Whent and brought the world into the Sollan Empire's sphere of influence. Otavia Corvo joined Hadrian's group on Pharos, having previously served as third officer aboard the Norman mercenary ship Pharaoh.
Politics
Pharos was ruled by Marius Whent, a warlord who styled himself an Admiral. Whent allied with the Norman mercenary Emil Bordelon, who commanded a company of soldiers alongside the Red Company before betraying Hadrian's forces to Whent. The Red Company was hired to support local rebels who favored Imperial annexation. The campaign lasted approximately four months: one month for the extraction of a captured operative, followed by three more months culminating in Bordelon's death and Whent's surrender. The campaign's success strengthened the Empire's hold in the Veil of Marinus. Following the affair, the Meidua Red Company gained legal recognition on Pharos alongside Monmara and several Norman Freehold worlds. Whent's battle standard -- a yellow flag bearing a black eight-winged angel with a skull face -- was cut down by Jinan following his defeat.
Notable Locations
The admiral's palace: Whent's fortified compound and administrative seat, containing an admiral's desk from which Hadrian took Whent's sword during the final phase of the campaign. Jinan extracted Hadrian from this compound and led him through the capital city while pursued by Whent's forces. Hadrian and Jinan are also recalled to have climbed the exterior of the admiral's palace together.
The capital city bazaar: a marketplace in Pharos's capital city where goods including decorative textiles were traded. Jinan acquired a red silk curtain from this bazaar following Whent's surrender.
