Valka Onderra vhad Edda

Character

Also known as: Valka, Valka (A crew member of the Mistral), Valka Onderra, Valka Onderra Vhad Edda

First appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 6

Valka Onderra Vhad Edda was a Tavrosi xenologist from Edda in the Tavros Demarchy and the closest companion and scientific collaborator of Hadrian across two decades. She was killed at Perfugium when transport E-17 was destroyed by a Cielcin attack during the evacuation.

Appearance

Valka was pale with dark red-black hair and golden eyes, with the fractal intaglio clan tattoo covering her left arm and a faint scar beneath her left breast from a knife-missile wound sustained in Hadrian's apartments.

Attributes

Valka carried a Tavrosi nematocyte neural lace made of her own cells with a porcelain shunt node at the spine base, implanted in childhood. The lace granted eidetic recall, electronic manipulation, autonomic control, memory projection, and the ability to disable and seize control of electronic systems including drone swarms and golems. She had near-flawless Cielcin fluency and served five years in the Tavrosi Orbital Guard, destroying a seized ship with over two thousand captives before resigning. She studied xenology and archaeology at Isana University on Edda. Her clansmen on Edda attempted to treat Urbaine's neural intrusion but could only cripple the virus; she refused an offer to overwrite her neural lace entirely, choosing to live with her pain.

Relationships

  • Hadrian -- deep research and personal partnership across two decades; she died while they were separated by a tunnel collapse on Perfugium; he carries her phylactery as the last piece of her
  • Gibson -- close companion; she cared for him on Colchis and retrieved medical help during his final illness
  • Pallino -- fellow crew member, deceased
  • Lorian Aristedes -- traveling companion; he expresses hatred for Urbaine for what was done to her
  • Alexander Avent -- identified as a political threat; his dismissal of her triggered Hadrian's breakdown
  • Urbaine -- MINOS Elect-Master who twice violated her neural lace
  • William XXIII -- she challenged him directly in the Perfugium catacombs; his dismissal of her as 'only Tavrosi' caused Hadrian to strike him
  • Prince Kaim Olorin -- he promises to order Jaddian priests to pray for her and a fire burning on Jadd to honor her

History

Valka arrived on Emesh under the sponsorship of Sir Elomas to study the Quiet ruins at Calagah. She protested the abuse of the native Umandh people publicly and over four years developed a deep research partnership with Hadrian. She used her neural lace to disable the bastille cameras and enable his escape, then departed Emesh with him.

She served as scientific advisor through multiple operations, including the Red Company's campaigns at Ardistama and Pharos. She chose to remain with Otavia Corvo's crew and volunteered her implant to disable cameras aboard the Balmung. She challenged the officer Osman over the unjust treatment of the Irchtani and proposed requesting an Irchtani military unit. She disclosed her service history: five years in the Tavrosi Orbital Guard, a battle against Prachar separatists, and ultimately destroying a seized ship with over two thousand captives before resigning. Her father was killed by the Chantry Inquisition at Ozymandias, ending her original ambition to become a pilot.

At Vorgossos she was held in a comfortable suite during Hadrian's imprisonment, attempted to probe the datasphere, and endured months of captivity singing in Panthai. She was released at Bassander Lin's insistence that the Empire would not risk trouble with the Demarchy.

At Forum she was confined to the Tamerlane for two years due to Chantry hostility. On Gododdin she used her implants to detect the absence of electronics in the field. She found a matching circular glyph between the Iubalu worldship monument and the Calagah ruins -- a significant cross-civilization discovery. She was stabbed by a knife-missile with her lung pierced within an inch of her heart and survived surgery. She agreed to enter fugue and later tended Hadrian's bedside vigil after the Colosseum duel, admitting in a small voice that she did not know what they were fighting for.

At the Imperial Library on Colchis she spent six years researching with undimmed enthusiasm, built a complete mental map in a single afternoon using her implant, taught herself Classical English in a week, bonded with Gibson, and commanded the Mericanii AI Horizon. She identified key Quiet sites including Emesh, Beta Aquarii, and Rubicon. Before the Battle of Berenike she presented Hadrian with a phylactery -- a disc of platinum or rhodium split in two, each half bearing their intertwined initials -- as a Tavrosi symbol of commitment used when preparing to have a child, acknowledging they could not. At Berenike she used her neural lace offensively, dropping dozens of nahute drones simultaneously and opening a chimera's faceplate to allow Hadrian to kill it. She listened to the Hadrian-Alexander confrontation and commanded Hadrian to act.

On Colchis she lived nine years among the Sevrastene islanders. She helped retrieve medical assistance during Gibson's final illness and agreed to surrender to Imperial authorities to spare the villagers an inquisition. She gave testimony of the survival journey after Padmurak: commandeering a Lothrian freighter, hiding on a Cielcin spinship with Corvo, Pallino, and Crim, and eventually launching the Ascalon.

At Maddalo House on Nessus she used her neural lace to reset surveillance equipment and spoke Nordei with Hadrian for private exchanges. She tended him after Lorian struck his wounded shoulder. At the Imperial audience on Carteia she steadied Hadrian with her hand at the small of his back during his confrontation with the Emperor. At Carteia she identified Alexander as the likely patron of the assassination attempt and argued against direct confrontation.

At the MINOS war council she briefed captains on neural-lace mind-transfer technology. During the fortress assault at Ganelon she accessed terminals with perfect memory, extracted access codes through her bare fingertips, broke Hadrian's combat paralysis by calling to him in Panthai, and headbutted Urbaine after he exploited the remnant of his program in her lace. In the dark tower she seized control of a golem and destroyed the golem-housed Urbaine with repeated shots. After the battle her clansmen on Edda were visited to treat the intrusion; they could only cripple the virus and offered to overwrite her lace entirely, which she refused.

At Perfugium she guided the landing party through the bombed ruins of Resonno by memory, held Hadrian when he froze at Dorayaica's voice, cracked a sealed door with her lace, challenged Emperor William directly in the catacombs, and expressed wanting a child with Hadrian -- against her Tavrosi upbringing. During the evacuation she navigated the group through the catacombs, remained at Hadrian's side through the tunnel fighting, and was separated from him by a tunnel collapse. She reached transport E-17 with Quentin Sharp. Hadrian watched her launch via holograph; during the burn she called out 'Hadrian!' and her lips parted to form a last word before the feed cut out. Transport E-17 was destroyed by a Cielcin force, killing her. The Emperor's subsequent dismissal of her as 'only Tavrosi' caused Hadrian to strike him across the face.

In the weeks following her death, Hadrian carried her phylactery containing a crystallized drop of her blood as the last piece of her. Prince Kaim ordered Jaddian priests to pray for her and a fire burning on Jadd in her honor. Hadrian's retrospective narration describes her as the chief of all the women of the daughters of Earth, and her loss as a wound that has never healed.
