Tor Xanthippus
CharacterFirst appears in Ashes of Man, Chapter 16
Tor Xanthippus is a scholiast who serves on the Legion Advisory Council on Forum and as chief scholiast of the Imperial Security Council. An old man with dark, deeply hooded eyes and a seamed face and close beard, he is a cautious and methodical advisor whose counsel shapes Imperial war planning against the Cielcin.
At the war council following Hadrian's return from Operation Iconoclast, Xanthippus provides a sobering intelligence assessment: nearly a century has passed since the Cielcin attack at Dakara, and the Extrasolarian telegraph map Hadrian obtained -- the most comprehensive ever acquired -- likely represents only the largest and oldest enemy vessels. He warns the alliance to prepare for a far larger force than tracked ships alone suggest.
During the siege of Gododdin, Xanthippus continues to advise the war council on the compounding crises of famine, plague, and logistics. He reports that food supplies are failing because soldiers pressed into farming cannot replace native farmers who understand the planet's soil ecology, a crisis worsened by the ongoing plague. He also counters claims of fuel sufficiency by noting that the joint fleet's helium demands outstrip Oort Cloud mining capacity. He argues that the Cielcin armada's sustained presence in the system indicates an intent to take Gododdin rather than bypass it.
