Orphan
CharacterFirst appears in Disquiet Gods, Chapter 47
Orphan is a centimanus -- a two-headed, three-armed humanoid cambion -- born from the body of the daimon Brethren on Vorgossos and sworn by oath to serve Hadrian. It called itself son of Cheyenne, scion of Felsenburgh, last in the line of Columbia, and last of the Americans. Entirely human at the cellular level, its mind was given to it by Brethren; it possessed prophetic sight and carried backup data from Vorgossos within itself. It served as pilot and guiding intelligence of Demiurge throughout the campaign against Dorayaica and the Watcher Ushara at Gododdin.
Over the course of the campaign, Orphan trained Hadrian in Demiurge's Archontic weapons, commanded the ship's uthras, fired the Darklight cannons to destroy three Cielcin worldships in the battle's opening seconds, executed the warp jump that carried Demiurge clear of the assault, and ultimately fired Voidmaker to destroy Ushara on Dharan-Tun. It sustained a facial scar when the Chantry daimon attacked during the datasphere battle.
Orphan had prophesied from the beginning that it would not survive the campaign. At the final council, it seized Hadrian and demanded Demiurge be given to it by right as the ship made by its mother, calling Hadrian 'Father.' When Hadrian ordered the Excubitors to hold rather than slay it, Lorian Aristedes shot it through its black-haired head with a needler. Hadrian held its hand as it died. Its last words were that the pain never passes. With Orphan dead, no one else could fly Demiurge, sealing the ship's eventual destruction.
