Bassem

Bassem is the helmsman of the Eurynasir, the Jaddian free trader captained by Demetri Arello that carries Hadrian off Delos. He is a huge, broad-shouldered man with skin and hair black as the Marlowe family banner, and stands nearly as tall as Hadrian's father -- one of the tallest men Hadrian has encountered.

Bassem is blunt and openly contemptuous of scholiasts, objecting to delivering Hadrian to Nov Senber on Teukros where the scholiast order operates. During the unauthorized dust-off from Delos, he closes the ship's comms to avoid dealing with traffic control, and he listens to aggressively metallic music on the command console until Demetri shuts it off once the ship reaches orbit.
