Berenike is a planet and the site of the Battle of Berenike, a major Imperial military engagement against a Cielcin army led by the vayadan-general Bahudde of the Iedyr Yemani. The battle is known for the death of Bahudde, severe casualties among the Irchtani defenders, and an incident later characterized as a miracle that was subsequently suppressed by the Holy Terran Chantry.
Politics
The Battle of Berenike was a major Imperial military engagement in which a Cielcin army under the vayadan-general Bahudde of the Iedyr Yemani besieged an Imperial fortress on the planet, deploying a Cielcin drill as part of the assault. Bahudde had previously razed the world of Marinus before directing its forces against Berenike; the fall of Marinus occurred immediately before the Battle of Berenike, cutting off worlds such as Eragassa from Imperial control. Imperial forces were supported by Irchtani allies. Nearly two-thirds of the Irchtani soldiers who fought at Berenike died in the engagement, including the Irchtani soldier Udax. The Irchtani commander Barda survived and was subsequently reassigned with his remaining men to a Legion fort on Zigana. Bassander Lin was severely wounded fighting Bahudde and was carried from the battlefield by Hadrian Marlowe. Bahudde was ultimately slain at Berenike with the help of the Irchtani. Following the battle, Hadrian Marlowe burned the bodies of Udax and the other Irchtani who died on the field, and made a promise to the Irchtani to help them take their place in the greater Empire. The Cielcin worldship Dharan-Tun was present at the battle and used sun-occlusion to darken the sky over the planet's surface during the engagement; this same technique was later employed by Dharan-Tun at Akterumu, confirming it as a deliberate tactical method. During the fighting, Hadrian Marlowe survived what appeared to be a lethal beam weapon strike, an event recorded and widely perceived as a miracle. Later analysis established that Hadrian had perceived the beam's path using temporal vision and stepped aside before impact. Recordings of this incident circulated and spread to worlds including Padmurak, and footage from Berenike continued to be cited in later years as evidence of Hadrian's miraculous nature. Prince Alexander witnessed the event firsthand. The Holy Terran Chantry moved to suppress the footage from the galactic datanet. In the aftermath, the Chantry tried Hadrian for treason and heresy for twelve years as a consequence of his actions at Berenike. The Cielcin Syriani Dorayaica subsequently demanded that Hadrian acknowledge his actions at Berenike as a deception, reflecting the Cielcin interpretation of the events there.
