Tor Simeon

Tor Simeon, known as Simeon the Red, was a scholiast-explorer of the Sollan Empire celebrated for his discovery of the planet Judecca and its native species, the Irchtani. When his crew mutinied -- killing their captain and leaving Simeon for dead with the intent to enslave the Irchtani -- Simeon survived, allied with the Irchtani, and defeated his former crewmates. He spent his remaining years ensuring the Irchtani were protected when Imperial settlement came to Judecca, and upon his death was buried in the Irchtani's holiest shrine, the black temple of Athten Var. The Irchtani named him Unaan Kril, meaning "the Red Worm": their alien eyes perceived his scholiast's green vestments as red, and the word unaan, meaning worm, reflected the human inability to fly as they do. Simeon had learned fragments of the Irchtani language through music, playing the flute as a bridge across their vast difference. Hadrian Marlowe counts Simeon as his greatest childhood hero -- a man of learning who took up the sword only out of necessity.
