Greenlaw
CharacterAlso known as: Lieutenant Greenlaw, Prisca Greenlaw
First appears in Howling Dark, Chapter 3
Prisca Greenlaw is a lieutenant who serves under Bassander Lin throughout the Red Company expedition authorized by Knight-Tribune Raine Smythe. Plebeian and blond, with a square face and narrow pale eyes, she is cold, officious, and a reliable executor of Bassander's will -- a quality Hadrian Marlowe dislikes, though he acknowledges its utility.
She joins the Arslan mission on Rustam, where she advocates military caution, speaks the Painted Man's name aloud against warnings, and confronts Hadrian after the tea house disaster. At the Council of Captains she confirms the SOM daimons cannot be downed by conventional fire and endorses withdrawal. She later moves to physically remove Hadrian from Bassander's quarters before Otavia Corvo intervenes.
At the diplomatic summit aboard Kharn Sagara's Demiurge she serves on Bassander's staff and escorts Hadrian to Knight-Tribune Smythe's private office during the negotiations. When Bassander assassinates Kharn and the Cielcin attack erupts, Greenlaw commands the rear guard during the retreat through the Garden, holding the line long enough to confirm the rest of the party has cleared before her position is overrun. She is killed in the action. Bassander calls her name by reflex afterward before remembering she is dead -- a moment of involuntary grief that collapses his composure before he steadies himself.
