Anju

Anju is the cook at Maddalo House on Nessus, and the only member of the original household staff to have remained throughout Hadrian's and Valka's seventy-year occupation. She began as a scullery maid when they first took up residence and has served as cook for nearly thirty years, rising before the rest of the staff each morning to prepare breakfast. Described as terribly ancient for a plebeian, she takes quiet pride in the continuity of the household. Her great-grandson has entered the civil service under the Magnarch's office, aspiring to patrician uplift, and Hadrian promises to put in a good word on his behalf. When Hadrian and Valka depart for the Tamerlane, Anju oversees the loading of their departure crates and tells Hadrian she does not expect to see him again.
