Vesperad

World

First appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 9

Vesperad is the planet that serves as the greatest seat of the Holy Terran Chantry's authority — the world where the Synod itself convenes, with jurisdiction extending over forty thousand worlds. Lorica College, the Chantry seminary that trains ambassadors and inquisitors, is located on Vesperad. Lord Alistair Marlowe arranges for Hadrian to enter Lorica College as an anagnost, the entry-level rank of the order, intending to place a Marlowe family member inside the Chantry political structure. Hadrian is given until the end of the local month Boedromion, marking the beginning of autumn, to prepare for departure. Lord Alistair's holographic endorsement letter, sealed with his crest and verified by terabytes of authenticating code, is sent ahead to the Chantry proctors. The official transport for this journey is the trading cog Farworker, which would make a steady circuit of the inner Imperium before reaching Vesperad over a journey of approximately eleven years in cryonic fugue, after which travelers are decanted in Vesperad orbit. Priors entering Chantry training are expected to surrender their personal possessions upon enrollment at Lorica College.

Hadrian never actually travels to Vesperad. His mother Liliana secretly redirects him to Teukros instead, leaving the Chantry posting as a cover story to mask his true escape.

When Count Mataro and Lord Luthor learn that Hadrian's specific Chantry posting was Vesperad, they react with visible shock. The name alone signals that any Inquisitors sent in pursuit of Hadrian would be operating with the full authority of the Synod — the apex institution of the Chantry — rather than a regional office. Hadrian uses this as a lever to make himself valuable to the count: by keeping Hadrian as a ward, Mataro gains a plausible shield against any Chantry investigation.
