Borosevo Colosso
LocationFirst appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 38
The Borosevo Colosso is the gladiatorial arena owned and operated by House Mataro on Emesh. Stone walls drip with condensation, runnels collect on metal piping and weeping windowpanes, and the arched ceilings hang low enough that a tall person can trail their fingertips along the smooth stone. Its fighting floor is an elliptical plane of brick and sand, with retractable terrain pillars and massive screens projecting proceedings to spectators throughout the arena. Speaker drones arc above the crowd to amplify martial music. The lord's box has a striped awning and stone rails with a Royse field strong enough to stop a rail-gun-launched projectile. The arena draws crowds of up to fifty thousand for major events.
The vomitorium connecting the street to the interior is lined with hanging banners painted with the jade sphinx of House Mataro and kept cool by a static field. The facility includes a medical examination room staffed by the slave medic Chand, an armory that prints armor threaded with carbon wire, shower rooms with oily white curtains, and a brass-collared service homunculus in the red Colosso uniform. The underground hypogeum extends well below the high-water mark, with deep prison cells whose ceilings open via shafts to public privies inside the vomitoria, seawater culverts running along the lower cell walls, and an isolated solitary ward in the deepest section for extraordinary prisoners. Criminal myrmidons such as Siran cannot leave the complex without a writ of pardon from the count's office.
The Colosso serves both as a gladiatorial venue and as the city's principal ceremonial space for palatine triumphs. Dorian Mataro's Ephebeia triumph is held here: the parade enters through the vomitorium beneath the lord's box, led by Dorian on a bier in full armor enameled green and golden, followed by representatives of the vassal houses Melluan, Kvar, and Veisi, Knight-Tribune Smythe and her officers, a platoon of Mataro hoplites, a full century of Imperial legionnaires in ivory armor, and a marching band with firework mortars. Grand Prior Ligeia Vas leads the full Chantry liturgy from the box, culminating in the ritual execution of the Cielcin prisoner Makisomn before fifty thousand spectators. Bronze bells ring throughout the castle and city during the ceremony.
The complex runs two tiers of fighters: proper gladiators including the Borosevo Sphinxes, and the myrmidon fodder pool of criminals, slaves, and volunteers.
