Borosevo Chantry
LocationFirst appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 27
The Borosevo Chantry is the principal Chantry sanctum of Emesh, a massive domed structure located in the city's White District. It faces a large raised plaza surrounded by pillars carved with depictions of the Four Cardinals; above the double doors of the sanctum is an icon of Charity. The weekly High Litany is celebrated every Friday and presided over by the system's grand prior, Ligeia Vas. The service draws such large crowds that worshippers cannot all fit inside the sanctum — screens are hung between the plaza's pillars so the overflow crowd can watch from outside.
The Chantry plaza serves as a gathering point for Borosevo's destitute, many of whom bear visible Chantry-administered punishments: missing fingers, thumbs, eyes, and tongues, with crimes tattooed in black lettering on their foreheads. Whip scars and burn scars are common among the beggars gathered there. Many congregation members wear face masks or gloves, reflecting fear of contagion from the Gray Rot sufferers also present in the crowd. The Chantry's teaching that beggars at sanctum doors should be given alms makes the plaza a productive location for those seeking charity.
