Mining Guild
FactionFirst appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 3
The Mining Guild — specifically the Delian Miners' Guild — is the organization representing uranium mine workers in the Marlowe domain on Delos. Its Meidua chapter maintains a hall and offices in the city, where factionarius Lena Balem manages operations and accounts. The Guild is one of the bodies Lord Alistair must manage alongside the Consortium, and it is in active tension with House Marlowe over failing equipment, dangerous working conditions, and unchanged production quotas. The Guild has legal standing in contract matters but is structurally disadvantaged against palatine lords in any competing dispute.
The Guild operates under difficult conditions: the failed Consortium deal left it with only a refinery crawler and a couple of drills as partial compensation, meaning some shafts still run with hand equipment rather than proper hazard suits. Adequate electron-shielded hazard suits cost approximately ten thousand marks per outfit; equipping a dozen new crews would require around 120,000 marks. At the council gathering, the Guild factionarius seeks a meeting with Director Feng, positioning the Guild's worker safety concerns at the intersection of House Marlowe's obligations to both labor and its commercial partners. Factionarii like Balem track accounts separately from palatine financial oversight. When Hadrian engineers a money-laundering arrangement to extract 20,000 marks from the Guild — publicly contracting for 150,000 marks while receiving a private parallel payment — he does so by exploiting his palatine standing to coerce Balem's acceptance, knowing no dispute she raises will be believed over his word.
