Old Crow

Character

First appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 28

Old Crow is a drifting sailor whom Hadrian encounters at a canal-side cafe in Borosevo after a failed theft. He is an older man whose bones ache from too many fugue-creche cycles — the repeated deep-space cryogenic travel that ages the body in subtle ways. His graying hair is pulled back into a greasy topknot described as bristling like a long-abused calligrapher's brush, and his face is craggy. He wears an indigo jacket cut in Nipponese fashion with gold and black diamond patterns at the cuffs, though he is clearly not Nipponese. He sits with a closed old book beside one fist and nurses a whiskey he considers wrong for Emesh. His accent is difficult to place; Hadrian guesses Durantine or Norman freeholder.

Old Crow identifies Hadrian immediately as a stranded offworlder and promises not to alert the prefects. He engages Hadrian in practical conversation about options available to a young man in his position: hothouse farm work, fishing, or fighting as a myrmidon in the Colosso. He advises specifically against the gladiatorial track, recommending myrmidons over professional killers. He is bound for Ascia, in the Commonwealth. Despite his drunkenness, he delivers a pointed piece of wisdom — that a person's blood or birth is irrelevant compared to their choices: 'It's what you do as matters.' When a prefect finally spots Hadrian, Old Crow raises his cup in salute and tells him to run — but to 'run somewhere,' not simply to flee.
