Julian Marlowe
CharacterFirst appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 3
Julian Marlowe is a long-dead ancestor of House Marlowe who lived in the ancientmost days of the Sollan Empire. He raised Devil's Rest — the Marlowe family castle on Delos, described as towers of granite and black glass above a gray sea — after helping Duke Ormund secure power on Delos, earning the Marlowe family its place among the planet's palatine nobility. His memory is preserved throughout Devil's Rest in bronze and stone: an equestrian statue depicts him at the base of the Great Keep's grand stair, his sword held defiant against the heavens, and his face — aquiline and severe — is carved into the keystone above the council chamber door beneath the Dome of Bright Carvings, surrounded by the funeral masks of other Marlowe ancestors. The resemblance between Julian's likeness and Hadrian's own face is striking enough that Hadrian notes it might be his own.
