Itana Uvanari Ayatomn
CharacterAlso known as: Itana Uvanari, Uvanari
First appears in Empire of Silence, Chapter 42
Itana Uvanari Ayatomn is a Cielcin ichakta — captain — of the ship Yad Ga Higatte, shot down over Emesh, whose death at Hadrian's hands closes the central crisis of Hadrian's time on the planet. It is shorter than most Cielcin of its rank, with more pointed features and more slanted eyes, its white hair braided at the left shoulder.
In its final hours, Uvanari endures sustained torture by cathars wielding a lead-sprinkler mace — a device that showers molten lead droplets across its white skin, leaving dozens of welts and causing it to vomit blue fluid. Through all of this it refuses to reveal the location of the Cielcin fleet, telling Hadrian 'Would you betray your own?' and cursing the cathars with 'Air rot you!' When Valka's power cut kills the electromagnetic clamps, Uvanari stands immediately despite its wounds. It kills Cathar Rhom by slamming his head against the wall and snapping his neck, then tearing the meat from his throat with its teeth. It fights Hadrian across the darkened cell, wielding the glowing mace, before Hadrian stabs it three times in the abdomen.
Dying against the wall, Uvanari reveals that it encountered humans before — as a child, not as ichakta — at a place it can only name rather than give coordinates for: Vorgossos, a world 'between the stars' (vohosum), which it associates with what Hadrian understands to be the Extrasolarians. Its final words are a repetition of the name Vorgossos. Its dying request to Hadrian was that Hadrian tell the others its wound took it — not that it was killed like this — a plea for a dignified account of its death. It is the second person Hadrian kills with his own hands.
