Chand

Chand is the chief slave medic of the Borosevo Colosso on Emesh, a Durantine woman marked as a Legion deserter by the tattoo on her forehead. She is small and old — Switch looks half a giant beside her when he helps her off the floor — with bones that creak audibly, leather-brown skin, a brow tattoo that blurs when she frowns, and a glass eye that points the wrong way. She wears the bronze collar of a slave and speaks with a heavy Durantine accent, occasionally cursing in that language.

Chand uses a scanner that sends a tingling pulse through flesh to check electrical conductivity, allowing her to diagnose stunner charges from the conductivity reading. When she finds Hadrian unconscious on a corridor floor after Gilliam Vas's guards stun him, she slaps his face and shines a penlight in his eyes to check for head trauma, then correctly reads the scanner as evidence of a stunner rather than a head injury. She knows Gilliam Vas by reputation, confirms he is the grand prior's bastard son, and advises strongly against pursuing the matter: "Chantry ain't worth fucking with."
