Carax of Aramis
CharacterAlso known as: Carax
First appears in Demon in White, Chapter 1
Carax of Aramis is a triaster in the Second Cohort of the 319th Centaurine Legion. Bald, with identification tattoos on his neck, he has served on the Emperor's dole for nearly eight hundred years, most of it spent in cryonic fugue, and estimates he has not been home in seven hundred years.
Carax survived the Cielcin boarding of the flagship Inviolate at Hermonassa when a Cielcin king seized him by the throat, lifted him one-handed, and threw him down with the words: "Tell your master I am coming." He also fought at Aptucca fifty years prior, and credits Hadrian with saving his life there. After testifying before the Emperor about the Hermonassa attack, Carax seeks Hadrian out to present him with a small silver prayer medal depicting Fortitude, with a crude trident carved over the Imperial sunburst on its reverse -- mirroring the pitchfork emblem on Hadrian's coat. He kneels before Hadrian and addresses him as "Halfmortal Son of Earth," asking for a blessing.
